Why You Should Try Pasture-Raised Pork

May 27, 2019 by Bridget Leave a Comment

This post was sponsored by Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative and they supplied me with pasture-raised pork products to try. However, all opinions are my own.

Most people think that because I’m a dietitian, I’m also a vegetarian. Nope.

Of course, we should all eat a lot more veggies and meatless meals. But I’m definitely an omnivore. Which is why I’m interested in where my food comes from and how the animals we eat are raised.#sponsored Interested in where your #foodcomesfrom? Check out my #review of @GrassRoots meats, including a tip to use leftover #fondue #cheese! #Nutrition #humanelyraised Share on X

A few years ago, I visited a large pig farm—I even helped deliver a baby pig! It was good to see that the family that operated the farm truly cared about the animals and the land. I helped delivery a baby pig while observing how pigs are raised.

But I’m also interested in finding out how small farms do things differently. That’s why I decided to try pasture-raised meats from Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative and review them here. You can try them too and Get $30 off your order of $150 or more, along with free shipping! (I get a small commission from orders that go through this link.)

Here are Five Reasons to Try Pasture-Raised Meats and Poultry from Grass Roots, Delivered to Your Door

  1. Health & Nutrition—Grass Roots’ animals live outdoors where they get lots of exercise, fresh air, sunshine, and fresh pasture every day. As a result, their meats are higher in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals—and they have more, better fats.

Pigs from Grass Roots get to relax in the mud in the forest!

Josh Jimenez and Kerry Harrington watch pigs roll in mud.

  2. Sustainability—Grass Roots’ farmers use regenerative agriculture, which replenishes the nutrients in the soil instead of depleting them. Their rotational grazing practices sequester carbon—improving the environment and slowing climate change.
  3. Farmer to You—Grass Roots is both the farmer and the butcher. And they pay farmers fairly so they can continue to raise meat the right way. Scenic shot of a single cow standing in a field.
  4. Butchered by Hand—Grass Roots owns and operates their own butcher, ensuring the highest standards. And – they never, ever bathe their meat in nasty chemicals like chlorine.
  5. Transparency—Grass Roots makes it easy to trace every step of the product from where it was raised to when it was processed. They have an open-farm policy and every pack is fully traceable from farm to table with blockchain technology.

I wanted to share with you my experience with the Pork from Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative. My next article will highlight other products.

  • The food came frozen, and I mean frozen like a rock. It was packed in dry ice, which is pretty cool (excuse the pun.)The box the meat from Grass Roots came in still had frost from the dry ice!
  • All the meats were labeled, including specifically where they came from. (All from the US, by the way.)
  • The plastic packaging was sturdy, but minimal. And the cardboard packaging was all recyclable.

The Pork Chop

My family is a fan of pork chops. We love to season simply and toss them on the grill. These pork chops were thick. They tasted more succulent than the pork you find at the store, and just fresher. It was so tasty, I ate a bit more than usual—following my own advice of eating a good portion of protein at every meal.  I give it two thumbs up!

The Ham

To be honest, I’ve pretty much sworn off of processed, cured meats, due to the links with cancer. But I still get a craving for grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and I do love to cook lentils with ham. And though I’ve tried some uncured hams from the store, they don’t do much for me.

Well, with the uncured ham from Grass Roots, my craving was satisfied. That ham was delicious, especially grilled between two slices of Whole grain bread and a bit of leftover fondue cheese. (Yes, you can refrigerate leftover fondue cheese, keep it in the fridge for a while and slice it up for sandwiches.) Talk about yum!

The Bratwurst

The bratwurst from Grass Roots seemed much leaner than the type you can buy at the grocery store, which is a plus if you’re watching your saturated fat intake. It went great with some home-grown organic artichokes, some Dijon mustard and a glass of Merlot. Scrambled eggs with Bratwurst and cheeseAnd this morning, I had it mixed with quick-scrambled eggs–, a handful of grapes and some French bread.

You too can experience grass-fed and pasture-raised meats and poultry, delivered to your doorstep. Trust me, they are delicious and healthy! And I’ve got a discount code for you!! Get $30 off your order of $150 or more!   (I get a small commission from orders that go through this link.)
